What do Startup Ecosystems need?
"Building good, long-term startup ecosystems isn’t a quick job (or one that can or should be rushed) — and requires long-term vision and strategy to do properly."
Our Co-Founder Wil takes a look at what he believes it takes to build long lasting, successful startup ecosystems and the factors that are needed to help make it possible 🙌
Wil has been on both sides of the table, starting his first #founder journey a few year ago, and now putting his experience into running #accelerator programmes and providing startup support 💚
During his time on an Accelerator programme in Newcastle, Wil noticed a number of "ingredients" that helped the ecosystem around the North-West thrive, including:
🔸 Great universities teaching smart people how to think (talent)
🔸 Strong (private and institutional) investors financing the early startup stages (capital)
🔸 High-quality startup support coupled with things like lots of good events to attend in accessible spaces where you could meet likeminded people (support)
🔸 And, most importantly, excitement about what’s possible and all three stakeholder groups collaboratively working together for the betterment of the community.

Quick wins to become more #environmentally conscious 🌿 🌟
It's good to reflect on (or learn) ways to become more environmentally conscious. We wanted to share some things that we’ve learned from various exercises and through our journey towards #netzero. As a fully remote business, we have committed to being conscious of our energy consumption and are all taking steps to being environmentally responsible in our daily lives.
Here are some of the things our Sustainability Lead Heather Baden added to our Remote Working Guide:
💻 Switch off electronic devices when not in use
💡 Made the switch to #renewable energy suppliers
💰 GREEN YOUR PENSION
💚 Implement quick wins to reduce home energy consumption by minimising drafts, using the thermostat effectively, wearing warmer clothes and only heating the rooms that you are in use.
🗑️ Never throw electronic waste or batteries into the bin. We have a guide on how to dispose of these things.
📄 Reduce paper usage
🛍️ Buy less of everything but especially clothing. Repair, buy vintage or second hand, do clothing swaps and always be aware of where your clothes came from.
🧴 Use environmentally friendly cleaning products
⚡ Use energy efficient lighting in as many appliances as possible
These are just a few examples of what we’re doing but we encourage you to think of even more and let us know - you can add to our LinkedIn thread, and together we can create a resource for those who are keen to be more active.
KPMG and Tech UK Event
We had a brilliant time in Edinburgh the other week, where we travelled to KPMG’s offices for an event with techUK, discussing all things #Scotland, and improving the Scottish Tech Ecosystem 🏴🚀
Looking forward to the next one 💚 and definitely the best office view in Edinburgh 🏰
